John Axford can’t pitch another perfect game for Oscars

John Axford once had a streak of converting 49 consecutive save opportunities bridging two seasons.

His Oscars prediction streak didn’t threaten that mark.

A year after going a perfect 18-for-18, the Rockies relief pitcher opened up Sunday night’s award show going 6-for-6 before getting tripped up on the sound mixing category. He marked his first miss of the night with a clip from a movie that wasn’t nominated for an Oscar, “Billy Madison.”

Axford, live-tweeted during the show, taking over MLB’s official Twitter account and using the #OscarsWithAxford hashtag, also balked on Best Animated Feature — he was shocked that “How to Train Your Dragon 2” lost to “Big Hero 6” in that spot. “That win totally blows my mind!” he tweeted — but reached the night’s midway point 10-for-12 on his predictions.

The night’s second act didn’t go so smoothly for the 31-year-old, who finished 7-for-12 to wrap up the night going 17-for-24.

During one rough patch, where Axford went 2-for-4, he tweeted “#ImFailingYouAll,” which prompted a pep-talk from Rockies closer LaTroy Hawkins, “we only want you perfect during the season.”

It’s coming soon, to a second screen near you.
