Southwest Airlines goes from four weddings to a … well, you’ll see
Indeed that is what has just happened with one of Southwest Airlines’ (NYSE: LUV) most popular TV commercials of recent vintage — a “Four Weddings” spot that debuted last fall during the National Football League season, of which Southwest is a major  sponsor.

That first spot featured an especially energetic lass who — over the course of a mere 30 seconds — popped up at no fewer than four very different wedding receptions dancing with four very different groups of wedding-goers.

That first spot, because it was fresh and unexpected, actually spawned a wedding dance tutorial on MTV even as the commercial itself became known among its fans as “Seinfeld Meets Wedding Crashers.” Go figure.

The concept for the sequel TV spot, dubbed “Weddings 2.0,” pretty much follows the same story line point for point, without employing that last image of our wedding dancer fast asleep in her Southwest plane seat heading back home from all her wedding frolics. The new spot will be on view throughout the remainder of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.

Both the original and sequel commercials were developed by Southwest roster agency GSD&M in Austin. Both spots also are tagged to convey the message that Southwest offers low-ball fares so you and any wedding dancers you may know can fly around at will.

There’s nothing wrong with Southwest’s “Weddings 2.0” sequel.

It’s well-produced and our lady of the wedding dance floor continues to move with great exuberance — but not so much aplomb that she would be expected to waltz away with the mirror ball trophy on “Dancing With the Stars” anytime soon.
